Eat Your Art Out!

Maybe you’ve heard, maybe you haven’t — It’s that time of year again, literally, where we gather for an interesting afternoon of eating and drinking in the name of good will and charitable activities — this year, Eat Your Art Out in support of the Sacramento Metro Arts Commission.  It’s this Saturday, the 26th, from noon till 5PM and, as per the usual, we’ll probably be out late into the night; although, that is not a requirement.  So if you have the energy, the time, and a little extra cash, browse on over to http://crawltix.com/eatyourart/ and sign up.  Our team name this year is H-Cubed.

That Party Is Over

It’s been a good two weeks, having my brother home and all.  Logged a lot of family time and ate a month’s worth of home cooking in a very short amount of time.  (Dad and Mom make sure little brother gets many of his favorite meals.  We probably all gained a little weight, but it’s well worth it.)  Included two separate turkey dinners and a Tacos de Lengua feast last Saturday.  Which is to say, a lot of faces at the dinner table to show love.  I appreciate all them making time.  I’m thankful for that.  Much thanks to the parents, too!

Now, after my brother’s two week vacation, I need to rest.  You can bet we were busy late nearly every night visiting the local spots.  (Sorry, no pictures.  My camera never came out of its bag.)  I wasn’t on vacation so I had the joy of waking early to make my way to work.  I’m going to have a nap then see about paying my fine with the County library.  Seems I lost track of something.

In Missing Action, Like Who-Wha!

Don’t get me wrong folks, I enjoy this social blog media two point oh stuff, but sometimes the anti-typist world gets the better of my time and requires me to spend free moments sleeping rather than ranting about Valleywag bull nonsense.  Ya dig what I’m sayin’?  For real.

No excuses.

The Edible Crawl for the Cure was a smashing success!  While the gang and I ran through multiple eateries and drinking holes, we simultaneously contributed in part to raise nearly $20K for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  Nicely done! And a special thanks to Ms. Darby Flynn and all the midtown/downtown restaurants that made the event possible.

Too much food and good times left me legless for the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk the following morning.  (My bad, Bennie Hannah .)  Still, we raised a good bit of cash for this event as well.  Collectively, the event raised more than they’ve been able to count so far, but as a team…well, let’s be honest, I don’t have it in me to tally the sum, and Ben isn’t available to do the math.  I think we made half our goal, though, if I had to guess off the top of my head.

But October is charity event month, or something, so it didn’t stop there.  In past years I _played_ in my company’s golf tournament, but this year I opted for a _volunteer_ role and worked the sinners’ stop along the cart path.  Tequila, Cigars, Beers, and Beer Girls, Oh-My!

2008 Golf Tournament

I leave Sunday for a housing conference in Monterey, then return for a pre-bachelor party the following weekend.  We’re not quite out of the busy woods yet, but we’ll be back, I’m sure of it. Although, I do have to admit my brother will soon be in town, and you’ll see nothing of me then.  So let me keep my fingers crossed and hope I make some time to repair the errors that are WordPress and my Theme combined, as well as set aside a few moments for writing about all that is politically silly and Measure O in Sacra-tamato.

Real Human Moments?

I can’t say for sure how human were these real moments, but I can say that Thompology , KORe, and I made our way to Improv Everywhere’s latest MP3 experiment in San Francisco this past weekend held in the beautiful Mission Dolores Park.  The event, or experiment, involves quite a bit of human interaction, but most of it is very brief, and all of it is mostly scripted.  How real can your human moments be when they’re pre-written for you?

Don’t get me wrong, the event was a smashing good time, filled with moments of shaking, smiling, shading, rounded out with a gloriously epic balloon battle.  For forty-five minutes we, thanks to the Improv Everywhere folks, owned the park.  The innocent bystanders, in all their less-than-candid confusion, moved to the edges of the park to witness first hand the fun being had by several hundred MP3 Experiment participants.  Amazing, to say the least.  And for that same forty-five minutes, Thompology, KORe, and I owned the event.

It’s a pleasure to take part in something that one and a few others have spent so much time to orchestrate.  Improv Everywhere took their show on the road and invited anyone and everyone to take part.  All we needed was a colored shirt, a balloon, an umbrella, and a willingness to momentarily  relinquish our free will and restraint.  Sure, no problem.  Any opportunity to interrupt the food-eating of an unsuspecting couple is a registered good time in my book.  High-fives all around and, oh, can I hug your bike before I chase your tiny dog around the park.  Excuse me, I’m living an adventure here, please don’t interrupt.  But do enjoy the show.

I accept that the intent of the gathering is not to meet new people but to perform on a larger stage — I get it, I like it.  Except, I want to do it on my own terms and not in an effort to be anti-whatever.  (They slipped that in there at the end, but we’ll see how they play it on the final cut.)  I would much rather talk to strange people on the sidewalk than play thumb wars in a park with a person being told to engage.  There is nothing frightening or scary about doing what you’re told to do in a public setting that’s more than publicly acceptable.  There’s nothing to lose.  There’s nothing to gain.  I’m left sitting bored.

This isn’t meant as a cut on the Improv folks.  They’ve done a good thing, and they did it very well.  I’d encourage anyone interested or curious to give these guys a chance, interact in one of their shows, and definitely visit their web site to watch some of their past performances.  What I am trying to say, though, is that I expect a whole lot more from myself.  I eat these types of social activities for breakfast.  Meeting new people is not difficult.  Entertaining and confusing unsuspecting folks is not a challenge.  I require more.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – 6th Year Participants

Making Strides 2007

It’s that time of year again when team captain Bernadette and I put together a group of folks (Keepin’ 2nd Base Safe) and start raising funds to support The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.  This is our sixth consecutive year participating, and we hope to beat our record of $2,200 raised.

Click the “DONATE” button below and Help me and my team reach our goals! Every bit helps — no contribution too large or too small.  Whatever you can spare to support the cause is greatly appreciated.

If you’re local to the Sacramento area, or will be in town, please feel free to join us on the walk through downtown and Old Sacramento.  The event is October 19, 2008.  Start and Finish lines are at the Capitol, and we’ll probably start walking around 9AM.

Feed The Animals, Save The Planet

Latest Girl Talk Album

Pop Lovers Anonymous, get ready for another smashing good time with the latest mash-ups from Girl Talk!  Feed the Animlas is the follow-up album to the 2006 release Night Ripper (which we all know and love) on the illegal art label.  This new release is well worth the “you-name-the-price” price.  I opted for the ten dollar version plus shipping.

To put this in some kind of perspective, it’s been a long time since I’ve paid for a CD or paid to download music.  Not because I’m off downloading pirated music files, but because I’m a Sirius Radio subscriber, and I don’t usually have an interest in CDs or music files.  So that should help you understand how huge this is for me to spend any amount of money on an album.  Not only spend the money, but then come here and recommend it to you.

Briefly, I’ll say this isn’t exactly what GT was pumping on his last release.  While it’s still definitely a mix of pop music from every genre (that sounds funny,) he’s moved on and up to change his style just a little.  Clips are played just a bit longer, and more care and detail is given to the transitions between mixes.  It’s the right mix of being up-up-and-away for dancing and then mellowing out just enough to rest and catch a breath before the next fast mix hits.  The whole time keeping your interest in the party.

I’ve had the album less than 48 hours, and I can honestly say it’s all I’ve listened to on the home and car systems.  (Huge speakers aren’t required, but they help with the “getting pumped up feeling”.)  I’ve caught myself dancing at home, and bopping my head in traffic.  (Now if I can just figure out how to make my way to one of the concert dates.)

Fine, maybe you won’t be saving the planet if you buy the CD, but you’ll definitely feel an urge to get up out your seat and move your feet.  That leads to happiness, and we can all agree that happy people are good for the planet.  Right?

Do your thing.  Play your part.

GTC West – Governor Schwarzenegger Speaks

After being introduced by the CEO of GTC, and then again by California CIO, Teri Takai, the honorable Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger addressed a room bursting at the seams with IT folks eager to snap photos and record video with their latest and greatest hand held devices. He cracked some jokes, warned us to keep an eye on elderly neighbors while the heatwave is passing through, and said a little about our great State and its current state. Pointing out that the State lacks the necessary infrastructure to adequately support its residents.

That’s it. There wasn’t a whole lot going on. Most of the folks left when Arnold left. I guess not everyone was interested in hearing Scott McNealy speak about…well, I’m not sure, because I left. Doh!

All in all, the conference is a good use of a few hours of your time if you have it to spare. It’s free to attend, so you can’t beat the price, and you’ll meet a bunch of new folks eager to sell you things for your business. They’re going to have to spring for some drinks at the bar, though, if they expect to get anything done.

GTC West – Wednesday Highlights

GTC stands for Government Technology Conference.  It’s a time for a large group of people working in the IT field to gather in one place with all their favorite vendors, as well as enjoy lectures from a few keynote speakers.  The most notable at this year’s confrence being California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (speaking tomorrow morning.)

OpenDNS.com — Perhaps the most useful thing I took away from visiting with a variety of vendors.  There are two server IPs they use, and after configuring my network to utilize these addresses, managing where my office network traffic goes becomes much much easier.  Management is a breeze once the online account is set up for tracking stats and configuring access.  I can easily block entire categories (adult themes, social networking, nudity, etc.) from being accessed by anyone using one of my networks.

YouTube — Offers up 10 hours of content every minute.  I don’t know if this is true, but I could believe it.  It came up in conversation while I was talking with a software developer from IBM who is currently working on a video-mining project.  (He writes code to search video.)  I had never given much thought to it, I just assumed there was a lot of data moving around, but 10 hours every minute is an insane amount.
